At 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 17th, 2012, the Fort Lauderdale Chapter of Women in Aviation was greeted with a lovely star-filled night at the Broward Community College (BCC) Aviation Department. We were all warmly embraced by both BCC aviation students and staff eager to hear about the treasures that WAI membership provides.
President Melissa Grabiec opened the meeting by introducing herself and discussing the purpose of WAI. After sharing about the benefits of both WAI and Chapter membership she turned the time over to Vice-President Jessianna Bartier. She introduced herself and shared about her background in aviation. Jessianna then segued into WAI’s history. After that, she asked the attending students and staff members to introduce themselves and share why there were there; what they hoped WAI to provide. Then time was turned over to each and every board member to introduce themselves and explain how WAI had impacted their lives. We heard from Sharon Dreesen, Secretary, Michele Osbourne, our new Membership Chairman (Welcome Aboard!), Karen Anderson, Treasurer, and Virginia Knudsen, Outreach Chair.
We had access to a full movie screen and laptop so we were easily able to navigate both the WAI and FLL Chapter websites together. Students and staff were clearly able to see how easy and reasonable it is to join both WAI and our FLL Chapter by using the online websites.
We were each so honored to share our love of WAI and hear about the dreams of the budding aviation students. We also took a moment to acknowledge the recent passing of Melissa’s Father and Sharon’s Brother-in-Law, Lou Grabiec, a huge supporter of our Chapter, who unexpectedly passed away a few days earlier.
